Even before the movie’s name flashed on the screen, we knew the ultimate fate of the giant vessel: Titanic, which was about to take its Maiden Voyage. Standing before the whistling engine, Captain Smith of the screen, veteran actor Bernard Hill heaved “Even God himself couldn’t sink this ship.” And we know what happened in the later hours after the brim kissed the gigantic iceberg.

James Cameron’s Titanic finely portrayed the appearance of the Captain with a white beard and crisp uniform. Hill’s eyes had the same capacity to fathom the nautical miles that Captain Smith might possess while he stood behind the wheel waiting for his destiny. Though throughout the dramatic retelling of the fateful night, what are the reasons that the makers of the movie so meticulously dropped the facts and history of Captain Smith.

The Sinking Titanic

Captain Smith had spent his 40 good years in some of the other vessels gliding across the sea. It is said that he had the fortune of wheeling the ever-wonderful Baltic, Adriatic, and the Olympic himself. The misfortune with the floating iceberg cost him life with 1500 other passengers and crew members. Though Titanic may be a tale of love and loss, it remains to be an untold tale for many reasons. Due to the amalgamation of facts and other half-built theories, 5 separate accounts of his deaths have been told over the years. Would you do the same for Jack and Rose?

What Happened to Captain Smith?

On-screen we saw him standing fearlessly behind the wheels with water splashing all over until the ‘unsinkable’ was in a vertical position- unable to be wheeled back to the sea. In an interview, John Graves said that Smith seemed to vanish into the ether that was evident during the ship’s final minutes when he was throwing instructions in every direction. He was found perplexed as some of his bridge officers were found to be not understanding the severity of the situation. His Fourth Officer Boxhall did not find out about the iceberg incident until 1:15 AM, just an hour before the big crash. Although, conflicting accounts are still around and it’s tough to dig the whereabouts of a ship’s captain when all we ever knew about Titanic was a big sad love story.
