Princess Diana has left a long-lasting impact on the world and some of the habits have been practices by her sons and daughters-in-law. Diana was one of a kind and she broke a number of royal traditions to set a new trend.
Among a number of new trends that were set by Princess Diana, one was to be herself. She refused to just wear the tag of the royal family and wanted to make an identity of her own. She had worked as a part-time kindergarten teacher in London before getting married. In fact, she was the first royal to have a paying job before getting engaged. She picked her own engagement ring from the Garrard jewellery collection catalogue. And that created quite a buzz!

From writing her own vows to speak about her marriage publicly, Diana did everything ‘out of the box’. In the BBC interview, she addressed Prince Charles’s longtime relationship with Camilla Parker-Bowles: “A woman’s instinct is a very good one; obviously I had knowledge of it from people who minded and cared about our marriage … There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”
The princess also didn’t deny her own affair. About James Hewitt, Diana said: “Yes, I adored him. Yes, I was in love with him. But I was very let down.” Within a month of the interview, the Queen sent the couple a letter urging them to divorce.
In 1981, she made history when she famously refused to say that she would “obey” Prince Charles during their wedding vows. Her daughters-in-law later followed her lead as well and omitted the line from vows.
Princess Diana was the first royal to give birth to a future monarch outside of the home. She gave birth to Prince William in the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital in 1982 and Prince Harry in the same hospital in 1984. And Kate did the same. However, Meghan gave birth to Archie at Portland Hospital in London.
Most importantly, Diana put her family before anything else. She sent her boys to school which was once again a new step for the royals. The royals are usually taught at home by a governess inside the palace. Prince William became the first heir to the throne to attend public school. She exposed her kids to a non-royal way of life and let them get the taste of true life as much as possible. Diana would be taking the boys to get hamburgers at McDonald’s, rode the tube and the bus, and let them wear jeans and baseball caps.
