Google has announced the appointment of Noam Shazeer as one of the co-leaders of its prominent AI project. Noam Shazeer, previously the head of startup Character.AI and a seasoned Google researcher, brings with him a wealth of expertise and experience that will further strengthen Google’s AI initiatives.

Shazeer will serve as a technical lead on Gemini

Shazeer has been appointed as a technical lead on the Gemini project, which also includes other co-leaders Jeff Dean and Oriol Vinyals, according to a company memo addressed to the staff.

Gemini, which is a series of AI models in progress at DeepMind, Google’s AI division, is currently being incorporated into various products, including Search and Pixel smartphones, showcasing the ongoing effort to harness the potentials of AI technology across different platforms.

After leaving the chatbot startup he started in 2021, Shazeer recently joined Google again. The American tech giant paid billions to acquire him and a few other staff members into DeepMind and to get a license from Character.AI.

“We are thrilled to join the best team on earth”

Shazeer wrote in an email “We are thrilled to join the best team on earth building the most valuable technology on earth,”

Shazeer was a co-author of a groundbreaking 2017 research paper that ignited the current AI boom, and he initially joined Google in 2000, two years after the company’s founding.

Character. AI makes use of the technological advances described in the study. Last year, venture capitalists valued it at $1 billion, after raising $193 million.

Google, in a bid to invest in Character. AI, has reintroduced Shazeer, a key talent in AI startups, a move that aligns with Amazon and Microsoft’s recent acquisitions amid regulatory scrutiny of Big Tech companies.

Although they are not purchases, the other two transactions are being investigated by the Federal Trade Commission.

This month, a US judge decided that Google’s search engine broke antitrust laws by investing billions of dollars to establish an illegal monopoly.
