Following the end of the trial period, Spotify, operating within the European Union, has implemented a feature in its iOS app that enables users to easily view the precise cost of its various plans. This update aims to enhance transparency and provide users with clear information about the pricing structure post-trial.
The company revealed that it’s opting into Apple’s “entitlement” for music streaming services
In a recent announcement, The Company disclosed its decision to partake in Apple’s “entitlement” for music streaming services as outlined in an updated version of a previous blog post. The concept of this “entitlement” emerged following a significant €1.8 billion ($1.95 billion) penalty imposed on Apple by the European Commission in March.
The penalty was a consequence of Apple’s practices that restricted the presence of alternative music streaming applications on its App Store, prompting the tech giant to introduce this new provision to address concerns raised by regulatory authorities.
The commission’s decision follows an investigation launched when Spotify filed a complaint against the tech corporation, accusing it of restricting its service in favor of iTunes and Apple Music.
Apple initially rejected the update that Spotify submitted
Apple first rejected Spotify’s April update to add “basic pricing and website information” to its app in Europe. Now that Apple has authorized the adjustments, users will be able to view pricing and promotional offers within the Spotify app for iPhones.
They’ll also see a note directing them to the Spotify website, where they may subscribe to any of the service’s plans. However, the service elected not to provide consumers with an in-app link that would allow them to use external payment methods. As The Verge points out, this is because Apple recently changed its App Store rules in the EU, declaring that it will still take a percent of developers’ sales even if customers pay through third-party sources.
Spotify and other EU music streaming services are still unable to provide consumers with a simple purchase link in the app due to Apple’s illegal and predatory taxes, despite the Commission’s ruling. Spotify believes that if the European Commission enforces its decision, iPhone consumers could benefit from lower cost payment options and improved app experiences.
