Daley, a celebrated diver with Olympic gold, silver, and bronze medals, is known as the poster boy of British diving. He once had an 80-foot-tall banner displayed at a Cardiff store.
On 12 August 2024, Daley announced his retirement, ending a career filled with highs and lows.
Daley said “I have to make the decision at some point, and it feels like the right time. It’s the right time to call it a day,”
He won the hearts of Britain and the world
Daley, a well-known diver, competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, finishing seventh in the 10 meter platform discipline. In 2012, he earned an individual bronze medal, cementing his place in the hearts of Britons and people around the world.
The British sensation finally earned the desired Olympic gold medal in the men’s 10 M synchronized category in Tokyo 2020, partnered Matty Lee.
“I’m dating a guy, and I couldn’t be happier,”
A YouTube video from eleven years ago features Daley looking directly into the camera while resting on a Union Jack-printed cushion.
For the first time, he openly discussed his queer identity, he said “I’m dating a guy, and I couldn’t be happier, “I feel like now I’m ready and I wanted to do it, and people think, What will your dad say or your dad would have said? I mean, he always said to me, As long as you’re happy, I’m happy,”
Daley previously considered not competing in Paris
Daley previously decided to not participate at the Paris Olympics.
Daley, now living in the US with his husband Dustin Lance Black, decided to return to the UK after visiting the US Olympic & Paralympic Museum with their children. He spent two months training with Williams for more perfection.
In the end, a second gold medal was not in the cards. From the first dive of the men’s synchronised 10m platform final, it was evident that Yang Hao and Lian Junjie were in a league of their own and would triumph.
Daley said “I felt so incredibly nervous going into this, knowing it was my last Olympics. There was a lot of pressure and expectation. I was eager for it to be done… but when I walked out, and saw my husband and kids [Robbie, six, and 17-month-old Phoenix] and my friends and family in the audience, I was like, you know what? This is exactly why I did this. I’m here, and no matter what happens in the competition itself, I’m going to be happy.”
Daley’s reputation as a household figure has resulted in various brand endorsements and partnerships, increasing his net worth to a stunning £3.1 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.
