On Friday, the Chicago White Sox experienced a disappointing 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Detroit Tigers, marking their 121st loss of the season, a record-breaking number in Major League Baseball history.
Surpassing the previous record established by the expansion New York Mets in 1962, this defeat solidified their place in a not-so-desirable spot in the MLB record book
They’ve won 39 games so far this season
After winning the American League Central division and 93 games in 2021, Chicago has been steadily losing games ever then. 2022 saw the White Sox win 81 games, while 2021 saw them win 61. With two games remaining in the season, they have already won 39 games.
Following their Friday defeat, the White Sox shared on social media an image of a desktop computer with a list of “Things we’d rather do than read comments” and an image of their mascot leaning against a wall with the message “slams laptop shut til tomorrow.” The most obvious problem in Chicago has been offense.
The White Sox entered Tuesday’s game atop the Major League Baseball standings in terms of hits, runs, home runs, batting average, runs batted in, total bases, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. They are placed near the bottom of many important statistical categories. (Only in walks drawn does the team finish second to last.)
The White Sox began the season 3-22
With a batting average of.248 this season, first baseman Andrew Vaughn leads the team and is 87th in the league in batting average. With a 3–22 record at the start of the season, the White Sox had their worst 25–game start ever.
Chicago dropped its 21st straight game of the season on August 5, setting a new franchise record and making history as the first team to lose at least 21 games in a row since 1988. The squad won seven games overall in July and August after winning nine games apiece in May and June.
On August 8, the White Sox dismissed manager Pedro Grifol. Since then, the team’s temporary manager has been former player and three-time All-Star Grady Sizemore.
After winning the World Series in 2005, Chicago has only advanced to the playoffs three times: in 2008, the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, and in 2021. Since 2005, it has only triumphed in three postseason games.
According to Spotrac, the White Sox now have the 18th-highest payroll out of 30 MLB teams. At 26.1 years old, their average age is the second-youngest in baseball.
