Superlek Kiatmoo9, the new double ONE world champion, successfully defeated former divisional king Jonathan Haggerty at ONE 168 in Denver, Colorado.
Kiatmoo9’s well-planned game plan led to a KO victory, as he scored a solid elbow to Haggerty’s head in the opening minute of the first round. Kiatmoo9’s win solidified his position as a renowned kickboxing king.
“However, I know my plan.”
In the in-Circle interview that followed his victory, Superlek discussed his rapid finish and emphasized that everything went according to their plan.
He said “First of all, no doubt about it, Haggerty is absolutely incredible. However, I know my plan. I saw the opening, and I knew when Haggerty is about to throw the cross. I caught the elbow in and got the knockout,”
Superlek’s win at ONE 168 extended his ONE Championship winning record to 11 straight, and 13 in a row overall.
Haggerty, meanwhile, lost the ONE bantamweight Muay Thai title he won in April of last year after only one successful title defense. He is still a ONE world champion, with the bantamweight kickboxing title in his possession.
Next opponent could be Nico Carrillo
It’s unclear what Superlek Kiatmoo9 will do next in the bantamweight Muay Thai ring, but Nico Carrillo of Scotland seems like a likely opponent.
The “King of the North,” who is now ranked first in the bantamweight Muay Thai class and has gone undefeated in four ONE bouts, has long yearned for a world championship matchup with Haggerty.
Superlek’s victory over ‘The General’ at ONE 168: Denver on September 6th, however, has diverted attention away from his defense of the title versus Carrillo.
It’s interesting to note that Carrillo thinks highly of the Thai superstar, whom he witnessed winning their title bout against Haggerty.
Carrillo said “In my opinion, Superlek is the best striker in the world … So yeah, this fight could go either way. But the only thing I think that would side Haggerty would be his size.”
Fans should be excited for a potential title bout between Superlek and Carrillo because of their aggressive fighting styles; the exact date is unknown at this time.
