According to Trump’s claims, the vice president and presumed Democratic nominee, Kamala Harris, had exclusively highlighted her Asian-American origin up until a recent point in time when he asserted that “she became a black person”.
“I didn’t know she was black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black and now she wants to be known as black, So I don’t know – Is she Indian? Or is she black?”He made this statement on Wednesday at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago.
“The same old show” of “divisiveness… and disrespect”.
What Ms. Harris described as “the same old show” of “divisiveness… and disrespect” was what Trump said.
She said in a meeting “The American people deserve better. We deserve a leader who understands that our differences do not divide us – they are an essential source of our strength.”
Ms. Harris, the first black and Asian-American vice-president, hails from Indian and Jamaican-born parents.
She attended Howard University and joined the predominantly black Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.
She joined the Congressional Black Caucus upon her Senate debut in 2017.
“I respect either one,”
Donald Trump said “I respect either one,But she obviously doesn’t because she was Indian all the way and then all of a sudden she made a turn and she became a black person.”
Trump’s claims enraged a lot of famous personalities as well as many social media users, who commented on the topic.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said “no-one has any right to tell someone who they are, how they identify. That is no-one’s right.”
Congressman Ritchie Torres referred to Trump as a “Relic of Racist Past”, he also wrote on X “Since when is Donald Trump, with his long and ugly history of racism, the arbiter of Blackness?”
Trump has a history of attacking his opponents on the basis of race
Trump, a former president, has a history of attacking opponents based on race.
He falsely accused Barack Obama of not being born in the US, and he falsely claimed that former UN ambassador and Republican primary opponent Nikki Haley could not be president due to her parents’ non-US citizenship.
Since she was announced as the presumed Democratic nominee, Ms. Harris has been the target of numerous attacks. Republicans have questioned the choice, claiming that her race was the only factor in her selection.
He said “I’m just giving you the facts. She didn’t pass her bar exam and she didn’t think she would pass it and she didn’t think she was going to ever pass it and I don’t know what happened. Maybe she passed it.”
Harris graduated from the University of California Hastings College of Law in 1989. The New York Times reported that she failed her first attempt and passed at the second.
