Kamala Harris’ grandnieces, introduced by actor Kerry Washington, offered an unconventional tutorial to the audience before her historic address at the Democratic National Convention.
They taught the audience how to pronounce the US Vice President’s name, which is often mispronounced by her opponents, to taunt her.
The former president deliberately mispronounces her name
The previous president deliberately mispronounces and mocks her name. During his first rally after Harris announced her presidential run, Trump made frequent comparisons to the US Vice President.
He repeatedly mispronounced “Kamala.” Harris’ first name reflects her Indian background. It is pronounced “comma-la” and means “lotus flower.” Trump repeatedly pronounces her name as “Kah-MAH-la.”
In an address, he said he “couldn’t care less” if he mispronounced Harris’s name, asserting that his opponent, a Democrat, couldn’t even pronounce her own name right.
They are daughters of Meena Harris, who is the niece of Kamala Harris
Amara and Leela, daughters of Meena Harris Kamala Harris’s niece, were introduced to the cheering audience by Kerry Washington. She acknowledged that some people struggle with pronouncing “our future president’s name” correctly, but emphasized that she would help everyone get it right, despite the confusion.
Amara said “First you say ‘comma’ like the comma in a sentence,” then Leela added “Then you say ‘la’ like la-la-la-la-la.”
The audience shouted “Comma! La!, Comma! La!, Kama La.”
Their mother also made an appearance on stage to talk about her experiences growing up with Kamala.
She said “I grew up in Oakland, California in a house full of extraordinary women my mom, my grandma and my auntie who showed me the meaning of service, helping her sister, a 17 year old single mom fighting for justice for the American people and still cooking Sunday family dinner. She guided me. Now she’s guiding my own children and I know she’ll guide our country forward,”
The video went viral with people praising the kids on social media.
