In the run-up to the highly anticipated state elections on Sunday, a well-known German socialist politician was doused with a crimson liquid—possibly paint—during a campaign event on Thursday in the eastern city of Erfurt.
Sara Wagenknecht, creator of the new Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance, was just gently splattered by the liquid and momentarily exited the platform, according to German news agency dpa.
The incident comes as political violence in Germany is on the rise
A man was pushed, handcuffed, and taken away by security forces, but Wagenknecht later returned to the stage, stating she was scared but fine.
Political violence in Germany is increasing, with recent incidents including a violent assault on a prominent Berlin politician and a beaten-up candidate in Dresden.
Although no one was injured in Erfurt, the incidents highlight the ongoing issue of political violence in the country.
Both the opposition and the government have called on police to increase safety for politicians and election rallies, claiming that their members and supporters have been the target of numerous verbal and physical attacks in recent months.
Wagenknecht was campaigning in Thuringia
Wagenknecht was campaigning in Thuringia, one of two eastern states, along with Saxony, that will hold elections on Sunday. The far-right Alternative for Germany, or AfD, might become the dominant party for the first time.
However, Wagenknecht, who officially founded her party in January, aims to shake up the picture as the national administration squabbles its way to deep unpopularity. Her party is recognized by the German abbreviation BSW.
The high ratings for AfD and BSW in the previously communist east are due in part to dissatisfaction with the national administration.
Scholz’s governing alliance’s parties fought publicly throughout the European Parliament election campaign, resulting in poor results and escalating internal conflicts over budget concerns for 2025.
Wagenknecht’s party advocates for a left-wing economic policy with high wages and benefits, while limiting migration. She criticizes climate change plans and opposes sanctions against Russia and German arms supplies to Ukraine.
Wagenknecht’s party will only support state governments with a clear diplomacy and war preparation stance.
