On Wednesday, a distressing wave of bomb threats was unleashed upon over 100 institutions in Canada through emails, mirroring the alarming messages received by hospitals and malls in Delhi-NCR, India just a day prior.
These threats, exhibiting eerie similarity in wording, raised grave concerns about the safety and security of numerous establishments on both continents.
Institutions mainly linked to the Jewish community
The email threats were sent early in the morning, at around 5 a.m., according to Canadian media, and were received by about 125 institutions, most of which were associated with the Jewish community.
CBC News reported similar threats to those made to government and private hospitals and malls in the NCR a day earlier. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is aware of these threats and is working with local law enforcement to ensure safety and security in various institutions across Canada.
The Federal Policing National Security Program is investigating the source of threats, led by its Integrated National Security Enforcement Team in Montreal. The team is aware of an email sent in India and is in contact with international partners to identify suspects and determine if similar emails were sent in other places.
A senior Indian official said they had not been contacted
A senior Indian official, however, claimed that they had not been approached over this matter.
The email stated, according to accounts in Indian media, “We have placed many explosives in your building. They are placed in black backpacks. The bombs are set to go off in a few hours. You will all end up in a pool of blood, none of you deserve to keep living. Everyone inside the building will lose their lives.”
All of Canada’s main cities, including Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Vancouver, Hamilton, and Ottawa, where a hospital was targeted, were among the institutions under attack.
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) has confirmed that the threats are nuisance emails aimed at disrupting lives and are in contact with law enforcement.
PM Justin Trudeau posted on X where he said “I’m disgusted at reports that more than 100 Jewish institutions across Canada were targeted by threats today. This is blatant anti-semitism.”
