Uruguay manager Marcelo Bielsa reflected on how his authority took a hit when striker Luis Suarez openly criticized his coaching approach.
Despite this setback, the resilient Argentine leader emphasized that he was unfazed and fully focused on preparing his team for the upcoming CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifier clash against Peru.
Bielsa reassured everyone that he was approaching the crucial match with unwavering seriousness and dedication, determined to lead Uruguay to victory.
Suarez retired from internationals in September
Earlier this month, Luis Suarez, who retired from international duty in September, made serious accusations against Marcelo Bielsa, claiming that the coach’s training methods were causing division within the team.
Suarez also disclosed that some players were considering leaving the national team as a result. As Uruguay’s all-time leading goal scorer, Suarez’s concerns about team unity were significant.
Furthermore, he expressed disagreement with certain incidents that took place during the Copa America in the United States, where Uruguay, a powerhouse with 15 titles, finished in third place. Despite his reservations, Suarez decided to withhold his opinions and remain publicly silent on the matter.
“I know that my authority was affected in some way”
Bielsa claimed that despite their shocking 1-0 loss to Peru on Saturday, his team’s dedication remained unwavering.
Bielsa said “What happened during the week does not condition or explain how we played, nor do I think it has had an effect because it was a week with a lot of effervescence,”
He added “As for how the situation affected me, I don’t ignore what happened, and I know that my authority was affected in some way, but I prepared for the game with the utmost seriousness, and the response I got from the players was the same as I have always had since I started working here. It didn’t alter the conviction with which the match was prepared and the way the group and the coaching staff worked. The preparation was the same as always.”
After hosting fifth-place Ecuador, Uruguay, with 15 points from nine games, currently sits third in the World Cup Qualifying standings.
