Manchester City and Inter Milan showcased their top-tier skills as they vied for victory in a highly anticipated clash that ultimately ended in a captivating 0-0 draw during Round 1 of the UEFA Champions League at the Etihad Stadium on September 18.
Reflecting back on their intense final showdown in 2023, both teams relentlessly pushed forward, creating numerous scoring opportunities that had fans on the edge of their seats, only to come up short in converting them into goals.
Manchester City play Arsenal in Premier League
In preparation for the crucial Premier League match against Arsenal on September 22, Pep Guardiola selected a strong starting eleven. Manchester City, playing at home, dominated possession early on while Inter Milan resorted to a man-centered defense.
But in the first half, City wasted a lot of chances to score and were pretty wasteful.Erling Haaland scored the only goal of the first half for his team with a looping header that Yann Sommer easily stopped.
Savinho had a good opportunity aside from that, but he missed his shot into the seats. In the 35th minute, the Norwegian was given another golden opportunity, but his shot rolled agonizingly close to the wrong side of the post.
The final good chance of the first half for Manchester City came from Kevin De Bruyne, the captain, but his close-range shot went right into Sommer’s stomach.
Just before halftime, Inter Milan’s Carlos Augusto broke through on goal, but Ederson stopped his shot, leaving the score at zero goals at the interval.
Inter Milan were more subdued in the second half
Inter Milan were more reserved in the second half than they were in the first, preferring to keep their structure and attack only when a clear opportunity presented itself. After coming on, Phil Foden gave Manchester City a more rapid offensive outlet, but the Englishman was unable to convert his opportunities.
The best one was when Foden struck low and straight at the goalkeeper while unmarked in the box.Matteo Darmian put Inter Milan on the break, but the fullback decided to try a backheel instead of a shot, which upset Simone Inzaghi, his boss.
The visitors’ greatest opportunity of the second half certainly fell to Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who missed the mark with his attempt from close to the penalty spot.
Ilkay Gundogan had two fantastic late-game opportunities to win the match. The first came in the 88th minute when he knocked Josko Gvardiol’s cross right down Sommer’s throat.
Gundogan was unmarked in the box during the game’s final play in the ninety-fourth minute, but he was unable to steer his diving header goalward as the game finished 0-0.
