France coach Didier Deschamps was full of admiration for the exceptional performance of match-winner Randal Kolo Muani, whose two goals were pivotal in securing a hard-fought 2-1 triumph against Belgium in the Nations League A Group 2 encounter held on Monday.
By virtue of this important victory, the Les Blues took a significant step towards qualification for the quarterfinals, showcasing their caliber and teamwork on the international stage.
Kolo Muani netted a penalty and second-half header
With a second booking for captain Aurelien Tchouameni, France finished the encounter with 10 men after Kolo Muani scored a penalty and a header in the second half to help them hold off the competitive home team.
Kolo Muani has scored four goals in as many appearances for France this season, despite being a rare starter for Paris Saint-Germain.
Deschamps said “He’s interesting, he’s radiant, He is confident and has a very specific profile where in his runs with the ball, there is presence. He is a good header, and with us, he is very often successful.”
Belgium controlled the first few possessions and had the lead if Youri Tielemans hadn’t missed a penalty.
He added “We were shaken for the first 20 to 25 minutes where they (Belgium) put in a lot of intensity, while we made a lot of technical errors, When we were able to find solutions going forward, it was better for us.”
“We had to shake them (the players) up. In relation to what we said, and what the players had said, it’s mostly the mistakes, we had to calm down. We had to go forward and press well. Of course, they had chances, but so did we in the second half. We’re happy to win this match, especially with 10 men.” He stated.
“It’s a young team that doesn’t have a lot of experience,”
The fact that France’s star player, Kylian Mbappe, was out from their most recent Nations League games and that their starting lineup included a number of less seasoned players added to Deschamps’ satisfaction with the victory.
Deschamps said “It’s a young team that doesn’t have a lot of experience, There was seriousness and enthusiasm (for this match). It’s better to win these kind of games.”
After four games, Italy has accumulated 10 points, nine more than France, and Belgium has four points. The top two advance to the quarterfinals, which take place in March of the following year.
