Cristiano Ronaldo, the renowned Portuguese superstar, found himself in a heated disagreement with former Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho during their time together at the club, as reported by journalist Guillem Balague.
This clash between the two prominent figures occurred while Ronaldo was an integral player for Los Blancos, stemming from Mourinho’s controversial remarks that sparked tension and discord between them.
The incident occurred in the 2012/13 season
When Real Madrid was unable to retain their league title, the occurrence happened during the dreadful 2012–13 season. The Portuguese boss chastised his compatriot for not looking back following a 2-0 Copa del Rey victory against Valencia in January.
Cristiano Ronaldo apparently confronted Mourinho after taking offense at his remarks. Jorge Mendes was the two people’s agent, but that didn’t really solve the growing enmity between the two flamboyant Portuguese people.
Balague said in his 2015 biography of the player that the two nearly got into a fistfight after that remark. It was stated that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner had to be held back as he lashed out at Mourinho.
Ronaldo said “After everything I’ve done for you, this is how you treat me? How dare you say that to me!”
When Mourinho’s future at the Santiago Bernabeu was discussed, Cristiano Ronaldo’s statement left little room for interpretation. Their relationship quickly reached a breaking point.
He said “It doesn’t matter to me. What matters to me is my future and the club.”
At the end of the season, Mourinho was fired by Real Madrid, and Carlo Ancelotti was named as his replacement.
Cristiano Ronaldo left Real Madrid in 2018
In 2018, Cristiano Ronaldo moved from Real Madrid to Juventus for €112 million. At that point, the Portuguese had appeared in 438 games for Los Blancos, tallying 450 goals and 131 assists.
Among other things, Ronaldo had assisted the team in winning two league championships and four Champions Leagues. But the LaLiga heavyweights felt the timing was right to cash in on him because he was already past thirty.
Real Madrid yielded to the Bianconeri’s demands that summer, obtaining a higher price than what they had paid Manchester United in 2009. The Portuguese scored goals for the Bianconeri in 134 appearances, continuing his goal-scoring spree.
It may be countered, though, that he never quite hit the heights he had at the Santiago Bernabeu. Ronaldo returned for a brief period of time to Old Trafford following three seasons in Turin, where he won two Serie A titles.
Sadly, the 39-year-old’s time with the Red Devils wasn’t productive, and in December 2022, he finally signed with Al-Nassr.
