Newcastle United’s esteemed chief executive, Darren Eales, has made the difficult decision to resign from his role following a diagnosis of a chronic type of blood cancer, as officially verified by the club.
In light of this unfortunate news, the football community stands in solidarity with Darren Eales, recognizing his unwavering dedication and wishing him strength during this challenging time.
“I am incredibly proud to be part of the club’s exciting journey,”
Darren Eales, a 52-year-old professional, became a part of Newcastle in August of the year 2022. He has been performing his duties diligently in his current position and will carry on doing so until a new successor is chosen to take over his responsibilities.
Eales said “Being CEO of Newcastle United is an extraordinary privilege and I am incredibly proud to be part of the club’s exciting journey, However, it has become apparent to me that now is the right time to make this decision so that I can prioritize my health and my family.”
Within the first year of Newcastle’s £305 million acquisition sponsored by Saudi Arabia, Eales was named. Since his arrival, the team has advanced to its first domestic cup final in 24 years, the 2022–23 Carabao Cup, and last season, after Eddie Howe’s team finished fourth in the Premier League, it was back in the Champions League.
Following the departure of co-owners Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi, Dan Ashworth left for Manchester United, and Newcastle announced in July the appointment of Paul Mitchell as their sporting director.
He said “In the short term, it will be business as usual in terms of running the club’s day-to-day operations, and I will give my full support to a transitionary period that will enable the board to carefully assess and appoint my successor, I want to extend my sincere thanks to the club’s supporters, ownership, players and staff. I’m proud of what we have collectively achieved and I’m excited to see what’s ahead for everyone as the club builds towards a future of sustained success.”
“Our thoughts are with Darren and his family”
Chairman of Newcastle United Yasir Al-Rumayyan expressed gratitude to Eales for his significant contribution to the team over his tenure, saying it helped to build a strong foundation for Newcastle United’s success.
Al-Rumayyan said “All of us who are connected with Newcastle United are very saddened by this news. Our thoughts are with Darren and his family and we send him every good wish for a full recovery,”
“We will work closely with Darren to hand over the CEO role at the appropriate moment following a carefully considered search process, and he will continue to have the full support of the board and the Newcastle United family now and in the future.” He added.
