Djokovic is tied with Margaret Court for the all-time record for the most major singles titles, he can break the record with one more major win. He won his first match since winning Olympic gold 23 days ago.
He is still searching for a first Grand Slam title this year
Serbian tennis player Djokovic praised his Paris victory as his “biggest sporting achievement” but remains searching for his first Grand Slam title of the year. Speaking before the match, he joked about avenging his two younger brothers, Djordje and Marko, who lost to Moldova’s Albot in the past.
He said “I feel like there was so much at stake – I feel like there was revenge for my younger brothers,”
On Wednesday, he will take on fellow countryman Laslo Djere in the second round.
He still needs improvement
Djokovic, despite a comfortable scoreline, needs improvement in double faults, unforced errors, and serving efficiency. He struggled to put 47% of his first serves into play in a closed-air match at Arthur Ashe Stadium, taking 33 minutes to win the opening set.
Despite a promising start, the US Open champion was angry throughout the match, staring to his player’s box and expressing discomfort from the humid circumstances while wearing his knee brace from a prior surgery.
After losing serve early in the second set, Albot broke back to tie at 2-2 before Djokovic claimed the next four games.
The world number 138 held Djokovic at bay for a little longer in the third set, fending off five breakpoints, but the defending champion eventually broke through at 3-3 before sealing the triumph as the clock struck midnight in New York.
Djokovic, in an interview, said “I love playing night sessions but maybe not this late, Nevertheless it was great fun and I want to thank everyone for staying.”
With the triumph, Djokovic was also able to break the record for the most wins (78) held by a male player on the main showcourt at Flushing Meadows.
He further added “It’s the biggest stadium. Definitely the loudest we have in the history of our sport, The night sessions are the best in the world on Arthur Ashe.”
