At the recently concluded Commonwealth Chess Championships in Kalutara, Sri Lanka, the exceptionally skilled chess player from India, Shubhi Gupta, astounded spectators with her extraordinary talent. She displayed her expertise by not only clinching the coveted gold medal in the highly competitive girls U-16 category but also by proudly securing the prestigious bronze medal in the equally challenging girls U-20 division.
Shubhi Gupta’s outstanding achievements have not only brought glory to her nation but have also cemented her reputation as a formidable force on the international chess circuit, earning her well-deserved recognition and admiration from fellow competitors and fans worldwide.
She secured seven wins and two draws in U-16
Shubhi, a Women FIDE Master and the current U-19 girls’ national champion, made a big impression in the U-16 division with her seven victories and two draws.
She outperformed her competitors, winning ahead of fellow countrymen Mrittika Mallick (7 points) and Yashvi Jain (6.5 points), who claimed second and third place, respectively, with an amazing eight points out of a possible nine.
Shubhi demonstrated her competitive nature even more in the Open division, when she faced off against women grandmasters, international masters, and seasoned grandmasters.
She received a bronze medal in the U-20 girls’ class after finishing in third place with 4.5 points.
“It was a fantastic experience”
Shubhi said “It was a fantastic experience, playing against some of the top international players. I am happy that I could perform consistently in both U-16 and the Open category.”
She also added “Winning the Commonwealth U-12 title and the World Cadet Championship were important milestones in my journey, and this latest success has boosted my confidence further.”
Shubhi took home a Rs. 1 lakh reward money.
Ghaziabad-based chess talent, introduced to chess by her father, has consistently performed well on national and international platforms. She won U-12 gold at the Commonwealth Youth Chess Championship and won the World Cadet Championship title two years ago.
