Rumer Willis is appreciative that even after their 24-year divorce, her parents Bruce Willis and Demi Moore are still close.
Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE on Thursday, October 17, at the Los Angeles premiere of her new film Trail of Vengeance, Rumer, 36, commended her well-known parents for being excellent role models for parenting a blended family.
“I’m so grateful”
Rumer Willis said “I’m so grateful. I think one of the most beautiful things to witness about my parents’ relationship still is just their love and support of each other.”
In addition to Rumer, Bruce, 69, and Demi, 61, have daughters Scout, 33, and Tallulah, 30. The Die Hard actor also has daughters Evelyn Penn, 10, and Mabel Ray, 12, with his 2009-married wife Emma Heming Willis.
She also said “It means so much to me, the way that my mom, and I think to all of my sisters and I, the way that my mom shows up for all of us as we are working with it, as she is working with it, even how she is with my other little sisters,”
“We go over to dinner at Emma’s house with the girls and we’re family. And I think family can look differently in a lot of ways, but it’s just about what it means,” she added.
Rumer commends her parents for never inciting “the kids against each other,” as the parents of her closest friends did when they were living in Idaho as children.
Rumer stated “I never had to split a holiday. We never had to split family vacations or Christmases or birthdays. And I think that a lot of the time, it’s just our own ego, If you put your kids first, if you’re fighting with that person and can’t put aside whatever it is for your kid, that’s about you. That’s how I feel about it. And I know it’s challenging sometimes,”
“I feel like my parents set such an unbelievable example”
Rumer claims that she is still close to her ex-partner Derek when it comes to co-parenting.
She stated “I feel like my parents set such an unbelievable example, even when they separated of the co-parenting dynamic, and Derek’s my best friend, and that has not changed, We have found an amazing way to keep our friendship and our loving co-parenting relationship. And I think both of us are so happy that we can have that for ourselves as well as for Lou.”
On November 21, 1987, Bruce and Demi tied the knot. Their divorce was finalized in October 2000. The couple has talked well of one another over the years and has frequently posed for family photos at events. Demi disclosed in February 2021 that the family had spent the epidemic in quarantine together.
The actress from Ghost revealed this to Naomi Campbell on her YouTube series, No Filter with Naomi. She said “It was really a blessing. It’s everything that’s come forward has allowed us to reevaluate what’s important and what needs attention that has been overlooked and neglected. It was amazing.”
“Our family regardless of what the shape of it is, it’s important to keep together and for the little ones to feel comfortable with me, and to know me so they also know their sisters better, It was really sweet and we did have some silly times for sure.” She added.
