With the fall approaching soon, Billboard has officially proclaimed that the song that conquered the number one spot on its prestigious Songs of the Summer chart is none other than “I Had Some Help” by Post Malone featuring Morgan Wallen.
This chart meticulously tracks the trajectory of songs during the summer season, analyzing their success through a combination of weekly streaming numbers, airplay statistics, and sales figures from Memorial Day to Labor Day, spanning a total of 14 weeks. Remarkably, “I Had Some Help” maintained its dominance at the top of the chart for the entirety of these 14 weeks.
This is the second year in a row that a country song
According to Billboard, this is the second consecutive year that a country song has won song of the summer. Wallen also topped the summer songs list in 2023 with his single “Last Night.”
Country artist Shaboozey’s bouncy hit “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” claimed the second spot in summer song popularity, closely followed by rapper Kendrick Lamar’s explosive diss track “Not Like Us,” which took third place.
Interestingly, Charli XCX’s songs from the critically praised album “Brat” did not make it onto the summer songs chart, despite generating a cultural phenomenon known as “brat summer,” in which people embraced their raw, unfiltered selves to the beat of Charli XCX music.
The trend was unstoppable this summer, with the Kamala Harris campaign adopting it and the album cover’s striking green color dominating social media. In an X post on Monday, Charli XCX stated that brat summer has ended, writing, “Goodbye forever brat summer.”
Fans debated the result
Music enthusiasts on X, which is still a prominent forum among fan communities, discussed the findings on Tuesday. Many people were astonished that “Not Like Us” and Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” did not top the charts.
“Espresso,” a potential song of the summer, reached No. 4 on the Billboard chart, reflecting a shift in the definition of summer music as it becomes more personalized, according to Billboard’s senior director of music Jason Lipshutz.
He said “Colloquially, the song of the summer doesn’t even need to be a huge chart hit, It’s just going to be what defines someone’s summer, whether it’s something they heard on the radio a lot or something they’re listening to on their own streaming service.”
Spotify and TikTok have curated their summer songs based on online trends and cultural relevance. Spotify chose “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” “Not Like Us,” “Espresso,” and Billie Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather” based on streams and editorial staff’s assessment. This aligns with Billboard’s selection of summer songs.
However, it also named “Hot to Go” by Chappell Roan a song of the summer, referring to Roan’s meteoric rise and the song’s growing popularity over the course of the season. Roan did not have any songs on Billboard’s Songs of the Summer list.
Spotify stated “In many ways, it has been the summer of Chappell, with ‘Hot To Go!’ emerging as a 2024 festival favorite and becoming one of Spotify’s wild card picks in our midsummer update,”
TikTok’s “Million Dollar Baby” was the top song on the platform this summer, determined by the number of posts used.
The song topped Billboard’s Songs of the Summer chart at No. 5, followed by Carpenter’s “Please Please Please,” Hozier’s “Too Sweet,” Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control,” Eilish’s “Birds of a Feather,” and Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things.”
