Harry Styles is paying respect to his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne, who died at the age of 31.
Along with a photo, Styles wrote on Instagram “I am truly devastated by Liam’s passing, His greatest joy was making other people happy, and it was an honour to be alongside him as he did it.”
“Liam lived wide open, with his heart on his sleeve, he had an energy for life that was infectious. He was warm, supportive, and incredibly loving. The years we spent together will forever remain among the most cherished years of my life. I will miss him always, my lovely friend.” He added.
Styles ended his message by saying that his “heart breaks” for “Karen, Geoff, Nicola, and Rush, his son Bear, and all those around the world who knew and loved him, as I did.”
Payne died after a fall from the balcony of his hotel in Buenos Aires
Following a fall from his hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Payne passed away. Later, a preliminary autopsy found that Payne’s death was caused by “internal and external” hemorrhages, most likely not by the actions of a third person. Payne “may have fallen in a state of semi or total unconsciousness,” according to the study.
The surviving members of One Direction shared a collective statement of sadness for Payne after learning of the tragedy.
“We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say, But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly. The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam.” The statement read.
The statement was signed, “Louis, Zayn, Niall and Harry.”
One Direction was formed on the U.K.’s version of The X Factor
In 2010, One Direction was founded on the British version of The X Factor, where they placed third. After becoming a fivesome, the boy band released four albums before Malik, 31, announced his resignation in 2015. Before the other four members’ official indefinite break began in 2016, they put out one more album.
Payne spoke lyrical about his bond with Styles in the years while they separated.
“We’ve all had our success in completely different areas, and also musically, we didn’t really go down the same route. I think Harry’s done amazing, I mean, first album he had the one song off which is really really well and then [on] his second album, he found himself.” Payne stated in June 2021 while appearing on the podcast “Diary of a CEO.”
Payne gave Styles some love when the former band member won several Grammy Awards in 2023.
He wrote on Instagram “Wow … this image is really something to wake up to and when you write music like you do Harry you deserve every millisecond of that moment looking down smiling at the trophy you’ve earned, God bless you brother congratulations.”
