In March 2023, Guerdy Abraira, a prominent figure on Real Housewives of Miami, received the devastating news of being diagnosed with stage 1b breast cancer, thrusting her into a challenging battle against the disease.
Three months following her diagnosis, the reality star underwent a lumpectomy to extract a cancerous tumor detected in her left breast. Subsequently, Abraira endured four grueling rounds of chemotherapy, followed by a series of 20 radiation treatments that often left her feeling overwhelmingly fatigued and physically drained.
“Chemo will show you your mortality in three seconds,”
Abraira said “Chemo will show you your mortality in three seconds, It’s no game. For ten days [after each treatment] I was in bed. Chemo fog is real and I walked like a skeleton—it felt like my bones were about to break.”
The RHOM star had many difficulties, chief among them being how to manage her motherhood at such a delicate time in her life.
She said “I didn’t want my boys to see me in my weakened state,”
“I’m a party planner, so I control everything,” she added “My whole life is organized and I control my environment, I control what I get to do, I control everything about me.”
She continued “But the cancer was so uncontrollable, and I had no idea how to deal with it. ‘You have an appointment tomorrow. You need to get another shot. Did you take your pills? They need to do another scan.’ It’s like you can’t do anything.”
“So I secluded myself in my primary bedroom, So I was literally in my room the entire time, except maybe once in a while when I could walk down the steps of our two-story house, trying to hang on for dear life.” Explained Abraira.
“I’m obsessed with my life right now,”
Guerdy’s two sons visited their mother every day, referring to her bedroom as a “hospital room.” “They asked me how I was doing. Mommy, come to me. Come give me a hug.
The bedroom served as the family’s hangout throughout the nights and weekends. “We’d play charades together on the bed, Or we’d watch movies, all four of us, from my bed.” She added.
Abraira, who has been cancer-free since November, is enjoying more time with her husband, Russell, and their two sons at home and has drastically reduced her event organizing schedule.
She said “I’m obsessed with my life right now, I’m up in my kids’ business all day long, every day. We’re closer than ever.”
To celebrate Miles’ 17th birthday in August, the family went to his favorite burger joint and then went bowling.
“It’s all about quality, not quantity, and intimacy as a family, We’re so close and it is so nice waking up knowing that Liam’s in his room and Miles is over there.” She added.
“My older son, Miles, is in his last year of high school and I went college-touring with him,” she continued “My youngest son, Liam, is playing basketball and I am at all the games. It feels so good being there versus just seeing a video.”
“I know my kids, I am now catching up on all the times that I wasn’t around.” She concluded.
