Assamad Nash, 27, pleaded guilty to murder and burglary charges in the fatal stabbing of Christina. He admitted stalking her and following her into her apartment, where he stabbed her at least 40 times. The judge deemed Nash a danger to society with serious mental health issues.
“Christina Yuna Lee was killed in an unthinkably horrific manner in her own apartment at the hands of Assamad Nash,”
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg released a press release in which he wrote “Christina Yuna Lee was killed in an unthinkably horrific manner in her own apartment at the hands of Assamad Nash, Ms. Yuna Lee was a creative, kind and joyful person and her death not only devastated her family but left a lasting impact on an entire community,” Bragg added “I hope the resolution of this case offers comfort and a sense of justice for everyone that has been touched by Ms. Yuna Lee’s life and this tragedy. May her legacy be celebrated for years to come.”
On February 13, 2022, Christina Lee was killed by Nash in her six-floor walk-up apartment. Nash followed her and attempted to sexually assault her. Christina called for help, prompting her neighbors to call 911.
Authorities arrived but couldn’t break down the door until 5:40 a.m. Lee was stabbed to death, and Nash was hiding under a mattress. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
At the sentencing, her mother was not there. Boksun Lee, Christina’s aunt, stated that the victim’s mother is still unwell as a result of her daughter’s passing.
Lee’s father, Sungkon Lee, urged the lawmakers to name a homeless shelter in her honor. The family’s attorney, Charles Yoon, believes that this will reinforce the memory of the incident, and help prevent similar tragedies from happening again.
“The first mission of NYC and its police is to protect the safety of its citizens,”
Speaking out, Sungkon charged that the NYPD had failed to save his daughter he said “The police did not gain entrance into the scene of the crime until 1 hour and 20 minutes had passed since arriving at the scene, The decisive cause of Christina’s death occurred at the scene of the incident. We believe that there was an inadequate response by the police who arrived. The first mission of NYC and its police is to protect the safety of its citizens,”
Sungkon has filed a lawsuit against the department, stating that the Lee family’s main goal is not compensation but to remember Christina’s memory and prevent similar tragedies from happening to others.
