After two years of marriage, Nikki Garcia filed for divorce from Artem Chigvintsev. The filing was made hours after a source informed PEOPLE that Garcia had hired a divorce attorney and about two weeks after Chigvintsev, 42, was taken into custody on a charge of causing bodily harm to a spouse.
The document was submitted in California’s Napa Valley.
He was booked in the Napa County Jail
Chigvintsev was taken into custody in Napa Valley, California on August 29 on suspicion of beating a spouse. After being taken into custody and granted a $25,000 bond, he was freed from the Napa County Jail in less than 60 minutes.
Garcia was mentioned in the 911 call regarding the event that TMZ reported, even though her name wasn’t in the records. Garcia is said to have thrown shoes at Chigvintsev during the altercation, according to the dispatcher overheard on the outlet’s audio.
A representative of Garcia said “This is a private matter and Nikki asks for privacy for her and her family at this time.”
When Garcia was seen for the first time outside of her wedding band on September 2, during a live hot dog eating competition on Netflix called Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef, which she co-hosted with Rob Riggle, rumors about their breakup grew.
“This song is our love story,”
The pair posted to their individual Instagram profiles to commemorate their second wedding anniversary just two days before the event.
Chigvintsev posted a message on Instagram with pictures from their wedding, the caption read “Happy anniversary my love, can’t see my life with out you, You are my everything ❤️”
On their anniversary, while Nikki shared the words to Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” she also reflected on the couple’s love story.
“This song is our love story,” she wrote with a video from her wedding “I’ll never forget where I was when I asked Jesus about Artem. Having a conversation with He & God. How my feelings felt too soon. It all felt too fast. And then this song came on.”
She also added “And that’s when I knew that I was falling in love with him and that it was all meant to be. ✨,”
Garcia and Chigvintsev met in 2017 on Dancing with the Stars, while Garcia was engaged to John Cena. In 2018, they officially ended their six-year relationship in July 2018.
Later that year, the DWTS duo got back together, and in March 2019, they officially announced their love on Instagram. The couple has since enjoyed a number of significant occasions as a couple: they got engaged in November 2019, received their son Matteo in July 2020, and said “I do” in August 2022.
