Liverpool’s influential captain, Virgil van Dijk, has confirmed that initial talks have officially commenced regarding a possible extension to his contract at the Premier League outfit.
This crucial development comes as his existing agreement is scheduled to conclude at the culmination of the current season.
The Dutch defender’s future at the club is now under active consideration, with negotiations underway to secure his continued presence in the team for the foreseeable future.
He joined Liverpool from Southampton in 2018
The 33-year-old Dutch international defender made a significant transfer move to the Merseyside club from Southampton in 2018, marking the beginning of a successful journey with the team.
His invaluable contributions have played an instrumental role in leading the club to victory in major competitions, including the Premier League, Champions League, two League Cup trophies, the FA Cup, and the Club World Cup, solidifying his reputation as a key player in the team’s achievements over the years.
Van Dijk said “I can say obviously discussions are ongoing with the right people, they have started up but I don’t know, we will see what happens in the future,”
“My full focus is on Liverpool, wanting to win games that are ahead of me and nothing else. I feel very good, physically, mentally and I am having fun … Full commitment is with Liverpool and to be successful this season.” He added.
Arne Slot said that players must earn their future deals
Liverpool manager Arne Slot emphasized back in August that key senior players such as Van Dijk, the exceptional Egypt forward Mohamed Salah, and the talented England defender Trent Alexander-Arnold – all of whom have contracts expiring soon – must showcase their value and performance to warrant contract extensions.
Slot, a newcomer to the coaching role at Anfield this season, highlighted the significance of the ongoing campaign in shaping the futures of these prominent players, underlining that their dedication and contributions on the field would be pivotal in determining any potential contract renewals.
As Liverpool currently sit at the top of the league table, narrowly leading Manchester City by a single point after an intense eight-game start to the season, the pressure is on for these players to demonstrate their worth and secure their places in the club’s long-term plans.
