English Championship club Middleborough playfully jabbed at Cristiano Ronaldo after he expressed frustration following his team’s scoreless draw against Scotland in the UEFA Nations League match.
Ronaldo’s attempt to score was thwarted by the Scottish defense at Hampden Park on Tuesday, October 15, resulting in a stalemate for Portugal.
Middleborough seized the moment to humorously reference Ronaldo’s tough outing, adding a touch of lighthearted banter to the situation.
Ronaldo had a relatively quiet game
Ronaldo managed four shots during the game, but only one of them found the goal. In addition, he was upset with the referee for sounding the final whistle just as Portugal was ready to receive a corner kick.
After the game, the Real Madrid icon bounded off the field. Scotland’s starting lineup against Portugal included Ben Doak, who was on loan from Liverpool to Middleborough.
By sharing a photo of the Portugal captain and Doak during the match, the Championship team poked fun at Ronaldo after the game.
The frustrated-looking Ronaldo can be seen grinning at the Scottish winger. The image was captioned by Middleborough with the child’s hands resting on Ronaldo’s chest: “Alright, mate?”
Portugal continues to lead Group A1 of the UEFA Nations League with 10 points despite the draw, while Scotland is at the bottom with just one point.
In four Nations League games, Cristiano Ronaldo has scored three goals, including the game-winning goal against Scotland in their first meeting during the September international break.
Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has come under fire
ESPN expert Steve Nicols has criticized Portugal’s head coach Roberto Martinez for starting Cristiano Ronaldo in their previous Nations League games.
Following Portugal’s goalless draw with Scotland, Nicols spoke on ESPN FC.
He said “You look at that side and see how talented it is, they made three subs in the second half, they brought on Neves, Bernardo Silva, and Leao. This group of players have a chance of winning a major trophy. He’s doing the other players a disservice by playing Ronaldo. If he’s going to keep playing Ronaldo all the way through, you can bet your bottom dollar they are not going to win the World Cup.”
Even if his career is coming to an end, 39-year-old Ronaldo is still an important member of the Portugal national team. With A Selecao, he has made 216 appearances, scoring 123 goals and setting up 45 more.
