Serena Williams bravely underwent a delicate operation to have a mysterious lump removed from her neck.
The renowned American tennis star, known for her strength both on and off the court, took to social media to share additional insights into her medical experience, shedding light on the challenges she faced and the importance of openness and transparency in health journeys.
Serena Williams detailed her journey in a video
On October 15, Serena Williams shared a video on TikTok that showed her experience getting an operation to remove a cyst in her neck. The legendary American tennis player disclosed that she had found a tumor on her neck in May.
She went for an MRI after calling a doctor, and the results showed that the lump was actually a branchial cyst.Williams first decided against having the cyst removed because the doctor had informed her that she was under no obligation to have it removed at that time.
But when the cyst grew, the 23-time Grand Slam champion had to have a biopsy and several tests performed.
Williams was urged to have the cyst removed this time around by the doctors due to its increasing size and potential for infection or leakage.
Following the doctor’s suggestion, the American underwent surgery. Following a successful treatment, Williams thanked her supporters and reassured them that she was well and recovering.
She wrote “Back in May I found a lump showing on my neck. I immediately went to the doc, got an MRI and was told I have a branchial cyst. Have you ever heard of that? They said I don’t need to get it removed if I don’t want to. So I did not get it but it kept growing. I decided to get more tests and 3 tests and one biopsy later, everything is still negative but doctors advised I get it removed as soon as possible because it was the size of a small grapefruit and it could get infected or worse, leak,”
She also added “So this is me removing it. I am feeling so grateful, and fortunate everything worked out, and most of all I’m healthy. I still made it to American doll with Olympia as promised. And yes all is ok,”
“So many things I missed”
One of the well-known figures that was absent from the list of celebrities who honored Rafael Nadal following his announcement on October 10th, was Serena Williams.
After the 2024 Davis Cup in November, the legendary Spanish player declared he will hang up his racket. After Nadal’s post, the media went crazy, with admirers from all around, including his former rivals Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, expressing their gratitude.
Serena Williams, meanwhile, was not present in the action during that time since she was receiving treatment for a cyst.
On October 16, the 43-year-old took to X (formerly Twitter) to apologize for missing so many significant occasions while receiving medical attention, such as Rafael Nadal’s retirement and the Glamour Magazine’s Woman of the Year award.
Williams tweeted “So many things I missed like @glamourmag Woman of the Year awards, @RafaelNadal retirement and I am still recovering, but getting better. Health always comes first,”
For many years together, Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal were two of the biggest names in tennis. Together, the pair achieved greatness in both men’s and women’s tennis and amassed 45 Grand Slam victories in the singles division. Williams gave up competing in 2022.
