Barcelona lost their Champions League opening 2-1 to Monaco, but coach Hansi Flick stated he is not concerned about his team’s performance.

After Barcelona defender Eric Garcia was sent off after just 11 minutes, Monaco took full advantage of their man advantage. Goals from Maghnes Akliouche and George Ilenikhena sealed the victory over the Catalans.

After his first loss as manager, Flick, who had guided Barcelona to a five-game winning streak in the Spanish La Liga, maintained his upbeat attitude and encouraged his players to focus on the upcoming games.

“We tried to defend as a team and attack as a team”

Hansi Flick said “With (Garcia’s) red card the game changed totally but I can see the positives. We tried to defend as a team and attack as a team. We had chances but they deserved to win,”

“I have told the team to lift their heads up because they are disappointed, but we have to focus on Sunday (La Liga match at Villarreal), which is our next game. It’s the time to recover, hopefully players will be back with a lot of energy. We have players that gave more than 100 percent, every player tried to give their best in this situation. I’m really proud of this team but we have to accept how we lost today.” He added.

Flick is optimistic about team’s chances in the tournament

Defeat against Monaco brought back memories of Barcelona’s 4-1 loss to Paris St. Germain in the Champions League quarter finals, which followed defender Ronald Araujo’s red card.

Despite this setback, Flick remains steadfast in his belief that the Catalans are not perennial strugglers in Europe’s premier club competition. Expressing optimism, he envisions a prosperous journey ahead for Barcelona, fueled by the aspiration to replicate their triumph of 2015 within the prestigious tournament.

Hansi Flick said “Today you see this situation with a red card after 11 minutes, it changed our match plan, we have to accept it, this happens,”

He continued “But we are strong enough to play a good Champions League, we have seven matches ahead and I think we will win many matches.”

Barcelona’s second league-phase matchup is against Young Boys.
