A tire exploded at a Delta Air Lines facility near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, killing two people and injuring one. The dead were Mirko F. Marweg, 58, of Stone Mountain, and Luis Aldarondo, 37, of Newnan.
“We are not releasing any details on our Delta employees at this time”
When asked about the employees’ job responsibilities, titles, and duration of employment, Anthony L. Black, a representative for Delta, stated “We are not releasing any details on our Delta employees at this time.”
The airline had already acknowledged the staff members’ injuries and fatalities.
In a statement they wrote “The Delta family is heartbroken at the loss of two team members and the injury of another following an incident this morning at the Atlanta Technical Operations Maintenance facility (TOC 3), We have extended our full support to family members and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.”
Delta has reported a wheel component incident at its Atlanta TechOps facility, involving two deaths and injuries.
The TechOps division, North America’s largest provider of maintenance, repair, and aircraft overhauling, is investigating the incident and working with local authorities.
A union representing airport workers cited tire explosion reports as the cause.
Working diligently to address the situation
In a statement after the reported tire explosion, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, a union that represents workers in the airline industry throughout North America, expressed its sympathies to the families of the victims.
They said “As a union dedicated to the well-being and safety of our members and the broader community, we will offer our resources to all those impacted by this tragic event, We stand in unity with Delta workers during this difficult time and we call on Delta and the relevant authorities to quickly launch a thorough investigation into how this happened.”
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens announced that Atlanta Fire & Rescue, Atlanta police, and airport teams are working diligently to address the situation
He wrote on X “I offer my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased Delta employees, My thoughts are also with those who were injured, and I hope for their swift and full recovery.”
The airport expressed its condolences to the families affected by the tragic incident.
