In Canada, both oat and coconut milk have been included in the recent recall of multiple non-dairy products suspected of containing listeria, a dangerous bacterium.
This precautionary measure, which follows the initial announcement made back in July, aims to protect consumers from potential health risks.
Unfortunately, the presence of this harmful microorganism has been linked to a total of 20 reported cases of illness and tragically, 3 fatalities across different regions of the country.
An alert was issued last month by the Public Health Agency of Canada
Last month, the Public Health Agency of Canada issued an alert cautioning against the consumption of specific almond, oat, cashew, and coconut non-dairy milk products under the Silk and Great Value brands due to potential listeria contamination.
The agency disclosed that at the time of the warning, there had been reports of 12 listeria infections and tragically, two deaths linked to these products.
In August, the number of illnesses linked to listeria infection increased, with a third death, 15 hospitalizations, and 20 cases reported. The majority of affected individuals consumed recalled non-dairy products.
The recall notice includes 18 products in total
The recall notice consists of 18 products with product codes 7825 and expiration dates up to September 27, 2024, or October 4, 2024. The affected products include Great Value Almond Beverage Unsweetened Original, Great Value Almond Beverage Vanilla, Silk Almond & Coconut Unsweetened, Silk Almond Original, Silk Almond Dark Chocolate, Silk Almond Unsweetened, Silk Almond Unsweetened Vanilla, Silk Coconut Original, Silk Coconut Unsweetened, Silk Oat Original, Silk Oat Vanilla, Silk Oat Dark Chocolate, Oat Unsweetened, and Silk Almond & Cashew Unsweetened.
The agency issued a cautionary statement, advising individuals holding onto the potentially harmful items to avoid consuming them. It is recommended that customers either dispose of the products in question or opt to return them to the original point of sale, as outlined by Today’s report on the matter.
