The Public Puts Faith In Monarchy: Legitimizing The Institution

The Economist Intelligence Unit is yet on another mission. In last year’s democracy rankings, it provided an astonishing account. Four of the top five spots have been occupied by the Royals. The head of the States of those countries were under the influence of the crown. It is assumed that a democratic outlook would reject monarchy. Let alone putting monarchy before democratic countries in such a rank. The results portrayed something completely different. Though here, different does not mean REVOLUTIONARY.

The Argument

In practice, monarchy seemed to work efficiently. The reason behind this is monarchy lets an individual make decisions. They get to make the ultimate decision. The decision may well be followed by the democratic regimes. Though an unimpeded public administration could be carried by a constitutional monarch. The various facets of such arguments are present in the Republican-leaning essay by Tom Clark. Clark’s essay has been published in Prospect magazine. Clark emphasized the need for shrinking the Royal rule to the continental size. He added, “it would be unwise to assume the institution can-or should- just carry on as it has been after Elizabeth II.”

The Royal Crown

Tom Clark, the former editor, mentioned that the crown could be sunk by a more divisive monarch rule. He brought to attention that royalty heavily depends on popularity. The YouGov polls proved just the same. In 2020, the YouGov polls show that Queen Elizabeth’s approval rate is 69%. Her approval exceeded by 40% than her son and heir Prince Charles. Again, a mere 7% approved of Prince Andrew. One of the unwise steps taken by him is to walk on a TV show. He was found defending his relationship with Epstein.

The Queen Of The Royals

The Queen maintained her view of unity. She decided to keep her counsel intact to remain a symbol of national unity. Her YouGov approval resonates the same. The Queen engages in a mild exercise of her power which remains out of vision. And is unthreatened by any kind of public scrutiny. The Guardian investigated and found a lot of instances where disturbances took place. In between 1968 and 1982, four events marked law alterations. The alterations prevented public intervention to her private wealth.
