Recently, the director of the next MCU film, Black Widow has offered a significant development about the masterpiece while speaking with Empire. Cate Shortland has revealed that Scarlett Johannson‘s role of Natasha Romanoff would hand over the baton to the character of Yelena Belova, to be played by Florence Pugh. Yes, you read it right!
The filmmaker told in the interview, “[Kevin Feige] realised that the audience would expect an origin story so, of course, we went in the opposite direction. And we didn’t know how great Florence Pugh would be. We knew she would be great… Scarlett is so gracious, like, ‘Oh, I’m handing her the baton.’ According to Shortland, it would give birth to “another female storyline”. Her words might negate the trailer theories suggesting Yelena’s end in the story.

Apart from that, she has also assured that Johansson simply wished to stay away from her last rites as a superhero in the last Marvel franchise. Addressing the actress’ will, Cate explained, “In Endgame, the fans were upset that Natasha did not have a funeral. Whereas Scarlett, when I spoke to her about it, said Natasha wouldn’t have wanted a funeral.” But, why is it so? The director continued, “She’s too private, and anyway, people don’t really know who she is. So what we did in this film was allow the ending to be the grief the individuals felt, rather than a big public outpouring.
