19-year-old Toby Roberts has etched his name in the annals of British sports history by winning Team GB’s first-ever gold medal in Olympic sport climbing at the Paris 2024 Games. The event, held attheLa Défense Arena, saw Roberts deliver an incredible performance in the boulder and lead event, securing his victory in a nail-biting finish.
The Climb to Gold
The competition was fierce, with Roberts placing third in the boulder section of the event, which involves ascending a series of four difficult climbs without ropes. However, it was in the lead climb—the final challenge of the event—that the young Briton shone brightest. Scoring an impressive 92.1 points out of 100, Roberts took a provisional lead, with only Japan’s Sorato Anraku, a world silver medallist and the favorite to win, left to climb.
Anraku needed just 86 points on the lead wall to overtake Roberts. However, the tense atmosphere in the arena reached a crescendo when Anraku slipped during his ascent, handing the gold to Roberts. The 6,000-strong crowd erupted in cheers as the teenager, overwhelmed with emotion, realized he had won.

He began climbing at the age of eight and honed his skills on a DIY wall built in his parents’ garden during the Covid-19 lockdowns. His father, Tristan Roberts, who also serves as his coach, played a crucial role in mapping out the path to the Olympics.
“I have been training for this moment my whole life,” Roberts said in an interview with the BBC. “To say it hasn’t sunk in is an understatement. It is a goal I have been training towards for like 10 years.”
A New Star in Sport Climbing
Roberts’ victory not only adds to Team GB’s medal tally but also marks a significant milestone in the relatively new Olympic sport of climbing, which made its debut at Tokyo 2020. With this win, climbing becomes the 44th different sport in which Great Britain has won an Olympic medal, spanning both summer and winter Games.
His nickname, “Toby the Terminator,” may not be self-chosen, but it aptly reflects his relentless drive and determination. Despite his youth, Roberts has already won golds in the boulder and lead individual events at the World Cup and has now become an Olympic champion.
