Chelsea Boss Maresca Defends Enzo Fernandez Amid Racist Singing Video Controversy

Enzo Fernandez is receiving huge racism from people after he posted a video on Instagram, singing a racist and discriminatory chant after their Copa America victory. Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has said he had “no bad intentions” behind the video about French players and insisted team spirit has not been damaged at Stamford Bridge.

Who is Enzo Fernandez?

Enzo Fernandez was born on 17 January 2001 in San Martin, Buenos Aires is an Argentine professional footballer, who plays as a midfielder for the Premier League club Chelsea and Argentina national team. He made his first debut in football in 2019, winning the Copa Sudamericana and Recopa Sudamericana. 

Before Fernandez’s senior international debut, he represented the country at under-18 level. He has also represented at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and won the tournaments like Young Player Award and the 2024 Copa America.

Fernandez apologizes to French players

Fernandez was heavily criticized by fans following his video on Instagram singing a discriminatory song on French players. He apologized and said truly sorry for the video.

“The song includes highly offensive language and there is absolutely no excuse for these words,” he stated 

“I stand against discrimination in all forms and apologize for getting caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebration.” he continued 

“That video, that moment, those words, do not reflect my beliefs or my character. I’m truly sorry.” Fernandez concluded.

Maresca’s statement on Fernandez 

Blues boss Maresca addresses the issue as many of his teammates have unfollowed him, answering the question of bringing him back into the squad.

 “I don’t think so to be honest. At the end, they are all human beings, I don’t think there is any bad intentions from any one of them.” Maresca said 

“So I don’t think when Enzo will be back that we’ll have any kind of problem. As I said, the player already clarified the situation, the club did the same so there’s nothing to add. Once again, I think they are not bad people or bad human beings.” he added

“It can happen but I don’t think there’s any problem at all. I spoke with Enzo, I spoke with all of them but as I said, the player already made a statement, and apologized, so it’s quite clear.” he concluded.
