After being arrested on suspicion of purchasing cocaine during the Paris Olympics 2024, Australia’s Tom Craig, 29, has received a 12-month ban from hockey.

Can Be Eligibility For The National Men’s Squad

He must serve half the ban while the remaining six months are suspended “contingent upon meeting conduct and behavioral requirements”.

Hockey Australia stated that the ban started on 9 September and Craig can be eligible for the  2025 national men’s squad, which will be announced at the end of the year.

“Craig is required to complete mandatory training and education programmes as part of his sanction,” Hockey Australia said, reported by BBC News.

Thomas William Craig is a field hockey player who is a midfielder for the Australian national team. Born on September 3, 1995. Craig was a member of the Australian Under 21 team, ‘The Burras’, Who won at the Junior Oceania Cup. In addition to this, he was a part of the team that claimed the Inaugural FIH Pro League in 2019.

Moreover, Before competing in the Champions Trophy, he made his senior international debut in 2014 during a test series against India. He has made more than 100 appearances for the Australian Hockey and helped them to claim silver at the Tokyo Olympics 2021. 

Released On Warning 

Craig was released on warning without charges after being detained by French police for allegedly attempting to buy cocaine days following Australia’s quarter-final loss at the Olympics.

“Tom has had access to all of the athlete support services under our programme and he will continue to do so throughout his suspension. His welfare remains our priority,” Hockey Australia said.

After the release from custody Craig accepted he had “made a terrible mistake” and apologized to his family, friends, teammates, and Australia’s Olympic team.

Australia’s chef de mission Anna Meares stated that the player is “a good person who made a bad decision”.
