According to ScreenRant, Marvel Studios has finally taken up the solo movie Black Widow portraying Scarlett Johansson as one of the oldest characters in her own standalone project after much delay.
Johansson debuted Natasha Romanoff in Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2 from 2010 where Nick Fury’s trusted S.H.I.E.L.D. associate tasked to keep an eye on Tony Stark. Since then, she has casted in six more films, until she met her controversial death in Avengers: Endgame.
Natasha’s growth as a character was terminated during her decision to sacrifice herself in exchange of the Soul Stone which was pivotal in their mission to bring back those affected by Thanos’ wrath. But despite her tragic demise, Johansson would be seen for the last time in the role in Black Widow. Directed by Cate Shortland, the film will take place in the two years between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War introducing David Harbour’s Alexei Shostakov aka Red Guardian, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Rachel Weisz’s Melina and O-T Fagbenle as Mason from Nat’s life.

Black Widow’s timeline works around the utter reality of Scarlett’s absence in the MCU before which a similar movie was in development at Lionsgate, readied with a complete script. Unfortunately, that failed to push through. Shortly after Johansson’s version debuted in Iron Man 2, Kevin Feige revealed about the possibility of giving the character her own film, during which their focus was on The Avengers. Therefore, branching out of their laid out plan seemed risky for the time to gain a stronghold among the fans.
Throughout MCU’s first Phases, Feige was ought to get the approval from Marvel Entertainment chairman, Ike Perlmutter to led by women and minorities. Disney CEO Bob Iger explained that the notoriously private executive was against producing Black Panther and Captain Marvel. It was only when Feige was given the authority to run Marvel Studios to finally get the ball rolling on the said movies.
However, if Natasha could’ve got her own solo movie around Phase 2 just when the threat of Thanos still wasn’t a pivotal plot point in the MCU, the audience might be a bit more excited about the project which was dampened in her inevitable fate from Endgame. It is to be noted that this film will offer an opportunity to Marvel Studios to make up for its mistakes in justifying female characters.
