US National Security Advisor Visits Beijing

Amid the strained relationship between US and China during President Joe Biden’s term in office, a senior White House officer arrived in China to discuss the issue.

Jake Sullivan, Biden’s Key Envoy

The national security advisor, Jake Sullivan, was welcomed by Yang Tao, the Chinese foreign ministry’s chief for the North American and Oceanian department, and the U.S. ambassador to China, Nicholas Burns at the Beijing airport.

Sullivan has been Biden’s key envoy for handling unannounced talks with China’s top foreign policy official to address the growing differences between both the countries, Washington and Beijing. The major aim of the visit is to maintain communication in a relationship that broke down in 2022-23 and was only repaired over several months.

“The goal of this visit is not reaching new breakthroughs or progress but to continue the stable momentum of China-U.S. relations in the past year through strategic communication, and to avoid new crises in the next few months,” he said.

A Final Summit Between Biden And Chinese Leader

Sullivan’s meetings, setting the stage for a possible final summit between Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping before Biden’s term ends in January, however, no major announcements are anticipated.

Moreover, It’s significantly important for both countries to not be involved in any crisis in the remaining tenure of the Biden administration, as it could set the tone for the U.S.-China ties under the next administration, said Da Wei, the director of the Center for International Security and Strategy at Tsinghua University in Beijing.

The Biden administration sees China as a strategic competitor and has restricted its companies’ access to advanced technology,  confronting the rising power as it seeks to assert influence over Taiwan and the South China Sea.

China’s Foreign Ministry said that the relations with the U.S. remain at “a critical juncture.” while noting that the two sides are talking on the issues related to climate and other. However, it accused that the U.S. is still suppressing China.
