After blaming the Israeli military for killing the commander Fuad Shukr in June, Hezbollah answered with the first phase of a retaliatory attack on Israel. On the other hand, Israel said it had launched airstrikes on southern Lebanon in a “preemptive” attack against Hezbollah’s preparation to attack northern Israel.
The Two Side Have Been In a Counterattack
The two sides have been in a counterattack for months, with most recent attacks a marked escalation.
The Lebanese group claimed to have fired more than 320 Katyusha rockets at 11 Israeli military bases and barracks, including the Meron base and four sites in the occupied Golan Heights.
Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr reported from Lebanese town Marjayoun, “Most of the Israeli strikes on Lebanon were in the border area, up to 5km [3 miles] deep along the 120km [74-mile] border.”
“The border area is now a military zone. It’s been evacuated … It’s been repeatedly hit by the Israeli army in recent months,” he added
Israeli Launched 100 Jets Towards Hezbollah
Israel Reports 100 Jets launched to Target Hezbollah Launch Sites in Southern Lebanon half an hour before Hezbollah preparing a launch to Prevent an Imminent Attack
Israel’s attacks have “the potential to draw the whole region into the full-blown war”, Sami Nader, director of the Levant Institute for Strategic Affairs, told Al Jazeera
As per Lebanon’s NNA news agency, one person sustained a serious injury in an Israeli drone attack in Qasimia. Moreover, the airstrike killed one person in the town of Khiam.
Israel was “determined to do everything possible to defend” itself. “Whoever harms us – we harm him,” said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
Yoav Gallant, Israel’s Defence Minister declared a nationwide “special situation” for 48 hours from 6 am and the airport Ben Gurion was temporarily closed after reports claimed of some injuries in northern Israel.
Moreover, the Israeli army imposed several restrictions on civilians in northern Israel and the Golan Heights.
“We’re Waiting To Hear From The Israeli Military”
“There are reports that this initial wave of attacks in southern Lebanon has now ended, so we’re waiting to hear from the Israeli military to see whether or not they plan to carry out more strikes, which could, in turn, trigger a Hezbollah response and expand this conflict,” Al Jazeer’s Khodr said
Adding, “This is, and has been, a very dangerous conflict, even though largely contained, there is a real concern that it could expand and spiral out of control.”
