Megxit has been the talk of the town for the year since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry left the royalty. But has everything totally ended?
In a historical decision, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry called off all their connections with the royal family in the month of January this year. Initially what was thought to be a soft ‘Megxit’ turned out to be a real one gradually. On January 8, they confirmed plans to raise their son, Archie overseas free from the constraints of the palace. But, by summer the tabloids were filled with the news of struggling prince who was rumoured to be trying hard to adjust to his new life. Meghan’s recent revelation that she had a miscarriage in July, however, gave clarity of the news of their bad phase and tough time.
Moreover, the year is set to end on a more settled one for the couple. They have now confirmed deals with Netflix and Spotify to produce documentaries and podcasts, declared financial independence by refunding the £2.4m in public money spent renovating their British base at Frogmore Cottage and postponed (for undisclosed personal reasons) a potentially messy court hearing over the Mail on Sunday’s publication of a letter from Meghan to her father.
Victoria Murphy, royal correspondent for Town & Country magazine and the author of Sixty Glorious Years: Queen Elizabeth II, in this regard mentioned, “If you imagine what they might have hoped to achieve when they decided to go their own way, I’d say they have ticked a lot of those boxes.”
But Murphy opined, “Harry’s relationship to the crown is not going to lessen over time; if anything it will be closer when he is the son, rather than grandson of the monarch. So everything they do publicly will always be discussed in the context of the royal family.”
