The future of 25-year-old Real Madrid’s backup goalkeeper Andriy Lunin is still up in the air despite a verbal agreement with the club to extend his contract. Lunin allegedly agreed to a long-term contract extension with Los Blancos but has not yet signed the deal.

The former youth was benched for the final

According to Relevo, Lunin and his agent Jorge Mendes are looking for improved terms for the Ukrainian to continue at the club. The revised demand stems from Lunin’s performances in Thibaut Courtois’ extended absence last season. Despite playing a significant role last season and having a great hand in the club’s success, the former Dnipro youth was benched for the Champions League final in favor of the returning Courtois.

The Spanish giants secured the La Liga title, the Champions League, and the Supercopa de Espana last season. Lunin, meanwhile, featured 31 times across all competitions in the 2023-24, recording  12 clean sheets. However, Real Madrid has reportedly told  Mendes and his client that they will not deviate from the terms agreed in March and April.

The club has emphasized even that, despite Lunin’s performances, Courtois remains their top choice for the goalkeeper position.

Who is Andriy Lunin?

Andriy Lunin born on 11 February 1999, is a Ukrainian professional footballer, who plays as a goalkeeper for La Liga club Real Madrid and the Ukraine national team.

Moreover, Lunin was a player for Metalist Youth Sportive School and Dnipro Youth Sportive School Systems. He made his debut on 16 October 2016, as a start-squad player in the match against Karpaty Lviv at the age of 17, in the Ukrainian Premier League.

“That’s what I can say about my future”

“Obviously, but, well, all I can say is that everything went well with Madrid and that is now in the hands of Madrid. That’s what I can say about my future.” Lunin replied when asked about staying at Bernabeu.
