Manchester United are continuing talks with Bayern Munich over a deal for defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui after their joint bid for the pair was rejected by the German club.
Agreed to the personal terms
Personal terms have already been agreed upon with De Ligt and Mazraoui, who were offered five-year contracts including another 12 months at Old Trafford
Both the players are represented by the same agent, Rafaela Pimenta and it is said that there is some confusion over Bayern’s rejection, as it was believed that United’s offer aligned with what the Bundesliga club was expecting for the out-of-favor defenders.
De Ligt and Mazrouai were surplus to requirements
Bayern said that De Ligt and Mazrouai at the end of last season that they were surplus to requirements and the club would help to facilitate moves if they present some credible offers.
There have since been checks to establish if the goalposts have shifted. United viewed the acquisition of De Ligt and Mazraoui as a good opportunity this summer and the cost of the deal was considered attractive to them.
The players no longer wanted in Bavaria
United are still trying to hit a deal with Bayern but are unlikely to uplift their bid significantly as it is already clear that the players are no longer wanted in Bavaria and have been offered that they can leave.
Mazraoui’s move is still contingent on United selling Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who remains in talks with West Ham about a transfer to the London Stadium.
United have been looking in the market for two central defenders this summer, and the position’s urgency has increased amid the news that new £59 million signing Leny Yoro will be sidelined for three months with a broken metatarsal.
