Disney’s Big Hits Of 2020 Aren’t Necessarily ‘Mulan’ Or ‘Black Widow’

Kenneth Branagh’s Artemis Fowl and the Dwayne Johnson/Emily Blunt-starring Jungle Cruise are seemingly Disney’s hotspots to hit big that aren’t any Star Wars sequel, a Marvel movie, a Pirates sequel, a toon or any live-action overhaul of a parody.

The Unfamiliar Jaunt

Artemis Fowl along with The One and Only Ivan and The Jungle Cruise happens to be a handful of not-quite-nostalgic “new-to-cinema” offerings that attempts to show Disney’s spin towards a hit live-action release outside of Marvel, Lucasfilm and their animated properties. Disney however, hasn’t had a “new” live-action hit since Into the Woods in 2014 and a “new” live-action franchise since National Treasure in 2004.

Enduring the histrionics: Artemis Fowl

Based on Eoin Colfer’s popular young adult fantasy series, Artemis Fowl performs in May. The $100 million-plus fantasy about a 12-year old boy hailing from a family of criminal masterminds who goes on to hunt for his missing father is Disney+’s kind of thing to end up on. Starring Ferdia Shaw, Lara McDonnell, Tamara Smart, Nonso Anozie, Josh Gad and Judi Dench, the picture future-proofed Disney’s theatrical slate last year which is 2020, might be partially responsible to justify the same.

An Asomatous Scion: The Jungle Cruise

On the other hand, Jaume Collet-Serra’s The Jungle Cruise, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, plays in it’s opening during late July with the slight brand recognition. That also features a trailer like the spiritual sequel to Stephen Summers’ Mummy movies, which could easily be Disney’s next Pirates of the Caribbean.

The Self-Conceited? Black Widow & Mulan

Directed by Kate Shortland, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow is arguably less of a sure thing in 2020 that has come up without any present-tense offering since 2014 after The Winter Soldier or in 2017 following Civil War. Mulan perhaps was supposed to provide the biggest boost for which Disney is in an odd situation after a record year.
