The novel coronavirus has affected people across the globe in huge numbers. Be it a sports industry or film they have seen a huge loss. However, the first vaccine of coronavirus has been tried.
On the other hand, the phase 1 study tested three different doses of the mRNA-1273 vaccine which was added on 45 healthy adults for the initial trial. They will receive two doses of the vaccine and after 28 days apart they will be monitored for both the safety and immunogenicity of the vaccine. It will be monitored on how well the vaccine stimulates an immune response to a protein on the surface of SARS-CoV2 coronavirus.
The first person who got the vaccine was 43-year old Jennifer Haller from Seattle who said; “I hope that we get to a working vaccine quickly and that we can save lives and people can go back to life as soon as possible.” She said this in an interview with TIME.
Moreover, Tal Zaks, M.D., Ph.D., Chief Medical Officer at Moderna shared in a press release that this was the first step against SARS-CoV-2, and they are expecting it to give important information about safety and immunogenicity as well. He further added that Moderna is already working with the FDA and other organizations to make a phase 2 trial which can be beneficial for patients.
The trial started 65 days after Chinese authorities sequenced the SARS-CoV2 coronavirus. Post 2 days after that, researchers finalized the design of the vaccine at the NIH and started to manufacture it while they finished the first batch on February 7th. On February 24th, the company shipped it to the NIH after analytical testing.
“Finding a safe and effective vaccine to prevent infection with SARS-CoV-2 is an urgent public health priority,” told Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, at the NIH. “This Phase 1 study, launched in record speed, is an important first step toward achieving that goal,” he further added.
Notably, the vaccine does not contain the virus which was earlier in the case with some other vaccines. This included a piece of genetic code called mRNA. This is certainly vital for the coronavirus to gain access to human cells. It is expected that the vaccine will stimulate the immune system to attack the virus and also prevent the spreading of COVID-19.
