Rebel Wilson Talks About the Struggles of Balancing Work and Being a New Mom

At the Toronto International Film Festival, Pitch Perfect star Rebel Wilson, 44, talked to PEOPLE about the difficulties of managing her new role as a director with her responsibilities as a first-time mother. Her directorial debut, The Deb, was featured at the event. Wilson welcomed her 22-month-old daughter Royce via surrogate in November 2022.

Wilson Shares Her Challenge As A New Mom

“It was hard. Royce was almost turning one. I wasn’t getting very much sleep and moved the family back to Australia for it, so it was hard,” Wilson said, reported by PEOPLE.

“I’ve got a bit more sleep now, now that the movie’s complete and stuff. But it was very challenging to be a brand new mom and to be doing a job that I’d never ever done before. That’s it. And I’ll recover, I’ll recover from that,” she added.

Despite the challenges, Wilson shared with PEOPLE that her daughter was able to be on set for part of the filming and has likely seen the movie several times by now.

“Royce came to set several times. Loves it. For some reason, she’s probably seen the movie a couple of times. She comes in when I’m watching things in my home cinema, she comes in because she hears the music. She does this little baby dancing,” the proud mom mentioned.

Wilson Explains Her Daughter’s Name 

Wilson’s daughter recently had her red carpet debut at the The Deb premiere. Dressed in a dress with a sweater over it, Royce smiled for photos at the annual film event alongside her mom, who wore a purple gown and had her hair styled in an updo.

Wilson’s fiancée, Ramona Agruma, was also in attendance, joining the actress on the red carpet. The couple got engaged in February 2023.

Just after the arrival of her daughter in November 2022, Wilson revealed to PEOPLE that her daughter’s full name is Royce Lillian Elizabeth Wilson.

Wilson explained the meaning behind each name and said, “I wanted an original name starting with the letter R and so eventually landed on that one. Lillian and Elizabeth are both family names carried by women in my family who I admire. Elizabeth, which is also my middle name, after the late Queen.”
