Anaheim Police Sgt. Matt Sutter confirmed to People that Bobby Graves, known as “Caleb” on social media, fell shortly after crossing the race’s finish line of Disneyland’s Halloween Half Marathon during the early morning hours. He died in a record-breaking triple-digit heatwave in Southern California on Sunday, September 8.
“Pronounced Deceased At The Hospital”
“They worked on him for an hour, but he was pronounced deceased at the hospital,” Sutter told People.
“The race started at 5 AM, I don’t know what start wave he was in but he crossed the finish line at approximately 7 AM, which is a really good time,” Sutter said, reported by People.
“As soon as he crossed the finish line, he started grabbing his chest. One of the workers noticed and ran up to him and caught him before he collapsed,” he added.
Graves was immediately given the medical treatment after he collapsed
“Fire and rescue personnel were right there on the scene. Emergency services could not have been there any faster,” Sutter told People.
Sutter said that medics “noticed he went into cardiac arrest, performed life-saving measures and transported him right away to the hospital.”
Graves Posted Videos Before The Run
Before the run, Graves posted a video on his TikTok account @calebgtravels account as he talked about the high temperatures in California and said in the video, “Disneyland Half Marathon — the Halloween Half Marathon — is tomorrow and I’m marginally worried now.
“I went outside today around 2:00 — which is probably the hottest part of the day — and it was 90-something degrees,” Graves added.
Graves shared another video to TikTok ahead of his run, picking up the number for the race and writing a caption that reads, “Stay hydrated and listen to your body, Good luck to all the runners!”
As per People, Sutter says that there are “no other reports that I know of” regarding collapsing or needing medical attention at the Disneyland race, and mentions that the race was held in the early morning, not during “the full heat of the day.”
