Angelina Jolie’s upcoming movie Maria, where she will portray the role of the real-life opera singer Maria Callas, one the most renowned opera singers, directed by Pablo Larrain. On August 29, at a press conference, the actress with other cast and crew members was asked about her personal connection to the late Callas.
Jolie On Her Connection With Callas
“Well, there’s a lot I won’t say in this room, that you probably know or assume. I think the way I related to her may be a surprise — [it was] probably the part of her that’s extremely soft and doesn’t have room in the world to be as soft as she truly was, and as emotionally open as she truly was,” said Jolie on her personal connection with Callas and also stated that she shares her vulnerability more than anything.
In April 2021, The Guardian reported that Maria will tell the “tumultuous, beautiful and tragic story of the life of the world’s greatest opera singer, relieved and reimagined during her final days in 1970s Paris,”
Maria is written by Stephen Knight, who attended the Venice press conference, marking the latest female-led biographical drama from Larraín, who directed movies including Spencer (2021) and Jackie (2016).
Larrain Appreciates The Teamwork
“I am incredibly excited to start production on Maria, which I hope will bring Maria Callas’ remarkable life and work to audiences all around the world, thanks to the magnificent script by Steven Knight, the work of the entire cast and crew, and especially, Angelina’s brilliant work and extraordinary preparation,” Larrain said in a statement by People while appreciating the work of writer and the cast members.
“My fear would be to disappoint them. So of course all other things, in my own business, if there’s a response to the work, I’m very grateful,” Jolie said in a statement by People during the Venice press conference, where she was asked about possible Oscar buzz regarding her performance.
