A report by People shares an exclusive behind-the-scenes video featuring director Tim Burton and actors Michael Keaton, Justin Theroux, and others discussing the creation of the film’s amusing costars.

Keaton Reflects on Burton’s Vision for ‘Shrunken-Head Guys’

Keaton, 73, recalls how Burton, 66, quickly dove into the project, stating that he “hit the ground running with the shrunken-head guys” and aimed to expand on that concept after Keaton’s character encounters one in the original 1988 film.

Each shrunken-head character ultimately became part of the title character’s entourage, with producer Tommy Harper noting that Burton “always loved them and wanted them to have more of a character in this movie.”

“I don’t know, maybe it’s working in a lot of offices and having a lot of jobs,” Burton reflected on the choice to have the “Shrinkers” serve Betelgeuse.”That represents a certain kind of work force that I’ve been a part of that just felt natural to me.”

“They’re all individual. They’ve got all their different hairstyles. They’ve got all their different expressions. A lot of thought went into their lips; are we going to paint that on or are we actually going to have practical stitching? They’re just so full of character, aren’t they?” fabrication supervisor Fiona Barnes stated.

Considerable effort was dedicated to crafting each character using prosthetics and practical effects, avoiding digital animation. Producer Harper noted that Burton was steadfast in his preference for practical effects, even when some team members proposed using computer-generated imagery for the sequel.

Burton and Keaton Discuss the Handmade Allure of ‘Beetlejuice’

“There’s an energy to that and a spontaneousness to it. Even though we’re dealing with live effects, we’re still kind of making it up as we went along,” Burton said.

“That’s the thing. I don’t think people realize why they like it. They don’t consciously know, but there’s that feeling that somebody actually made it, like handmade it,” Keaton speaks about the allure of the creatures.

The 4K UHD and Blu-ray editions of the film feature a director’s commentary by Burton, along with several behind-the-scenes featurettes that offer insights into the movie’s stop-motion artwork.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be available digitally on October 8, followed by releases on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on November 19.
