According to recent studies, South Korea has more dog strollers than baby strollers due to the decreasing fertility rate amidst shifting global population trends. This shows a broader picture of the nation’s fast-declining birth rate and marks 2023 as the lowest record in history.
Pet Strollers Have Increased In Numbers
According to a report from Gmarket, an e-commerce platform operator, The Korea Times, revealed that this year for the first time the sale of pet strollers has increased more than the baby strollers. Data released on Sunday, September 8, shows that during the first three quarters of the year around 43% of strollers sold for human babies whereas 57 % were designed for pet dogs and cats.
The rate of infant stroller sales is declining from 67 percent in 2021 and 64 percent in 2020 to 43 percent in 2024. This results in the rise of pet strollers from 33 percent in 2021 to 36 percent in 2022 and a total of 57 percent in 2024.
As per data released by a news portal from Statistics Korea, in 2022 the total fertility average rate for the number of children born per woman was 0.77 in 2022, recorded the lowest in the world. The National Statistical Organization noted that the expected fertility rate for this year would be 0.72 and will decide 0.6 to 0.68 in 2024 before surging again.
Highlights The Broader Socio-Economic Issues
While the ratio of raising pets is rising, Data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs revealed that compared to 2012 data of 3.6 million, in 2023 more than 6 million households had pets.
South Korea highlights the broader socio-economic issues as the situation is critical, and it also includes the high expenses of living and housing. With this situation, the rise in popularity of dog strollers over infant strollers reflects the nation’s challenges related to low birth rates and shifts in society’s trends.
