Unstoppable, the new wrestling movie is a real-life story of a disabled man born with one leg, who fights to become an NCAA champion. For Anthony Robles, 36, watching his own story on the big screen is both complex and cathartic.
Robles Had A Moment With His Mother
As per People, Robles said “I tried to hold my emotions in as much as I can, but it was just an instant wave at the very end,” after seeing the premiere of the film at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday, September 6.
Robles “had a moment” with his mother, Judy, at the screening and said “It just hit us and both of us, we were crying. I just couldn’t be happier, to be honest with you,” as Jennifer Lopez played the role of his mother.
The wrestler told People that trusting the filmmaking team, including director William Goldenberg and producers Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, to adapt his memoir co-written with Austin Murphy needed a significant leap of faith.
“The scariest part for me is that loss of control and having faith,” Robles said while sitting with cast members including Lopez, Jharrel Jerome, Bobby Cannavale, and Don Cheadle the day following the starry premiere, reported by People.
“But with this amazing group of individuals, we knew we could trust them and we knew that the integrity of the story, the message of it, and my family would be safe with this group,” he added.
The Most Difficult For Jerome To Play Robles
“It was told so beautifully. It respected what we went through, but also at the same time it captured where our strength came from,” Robles said.
The difficult part for Jharrel Jerome to play Robles was “between the gym and the diet and the sleeping and the lifting.”
“And then of course the wrestling, wrestling on the ground. who is doubled in parts of the film by Robles himself. Anthony has such a specific style of wrestling, so it wasn’t like I showed up to wrestling class and I was learning the basic, cookie-cutter grappling moves. I was on the ground and having to practice how to move on my hands, how to slide on my knees,” the actor added.
