On Thursday, September 5, Goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen celebrated becoming Germany’s first choice. He said the long-awaited opportunity to succeed Manuel Neuer as Germany’s number one goalkeeper after 12 years felt like “a balm for the soul.”

Coach Julian Nagelsmann Announced Him As The Number One

In 2012, First called up to the squad, Barcelona captain Marc-André ter Stegen stepped in as Germany’s permanent first-choice goalkeeper for their match against Hungary in Düsseldorf on Saturday.

In announcing that Joshua Kimmich would succeed Ilkay Gundogan as Germany’s captain. “Ter Stegen is the new number one,” said coach Julian Nagelsmann. 

Marc-André ter Stegen is one of the promising German goalkeepers. He was born on April 30, 1992, known for his exceptional reflexes, shot-stopping ability, and strong distribution skills. Ter Stegen began his professional career at Borussia Mönchengladbach before joining FC Barcelona in 2014, where he quickly established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Moreover, he has won numerous titles with Barcelona, including multiple La Liga and Copa del Rey trophies, as well as the UEFA Champions League. On the international stage, he has been a significant player for Germany, often serving as a backup to Manuel Neuer. 

As per Sportstar, Ter Stegen told reporters from Germany’s camp in the Bavarian village of Herzogenaurach, “I’m glad the wait is over,” and also noted that the appreciation he has received since the appointment as the number one goalkeeper was “a balm for the soul.”

I Want To Be Successful”

“I’m looking forward to this new task and to what I have ahead of me. I want to be successful,” he added.

“To be honest there were always these moments when you say: ‘Wow, that was another blow.’ The decision mostly went in Manu’s (Neuer’s) favor,” Ter Stegen stated, reported by Reuters.

The goalkeeper revealed he handled the disappointments “professionally” despite feeling “frustrated”.“There were always moments where you said ‘wow, that’s another blow’” he added.

Following the game against Hungary, Germany travel to Amsterdam to face the Netherlands next Tuesday.
